Tales from Valleyview Cemetery by John Brhel & Joseph Sullivan ~ Book Review

Book Description:

Welcome to Valleyview, where bodies lie buried but an ancient curse never sleeps. A father hears strange voices on his daughter's baby monitor. A husband and wife take a stroll through a corn maze that they'll never forget.

Tales From Valleyview Cemetery contains seventeen interconnected tales of terror -- legends of a town and cemetery entrenched in occult practice, macabre history, and a demon elemental waiting for his people's return. It is a short story collection, in the vein of Alvin Schwartz and Richard Matheson. Appropriate for teen and adult readers.

Review:

I love a good ghost story! I have always loved those short ghost stories from my childhood, those scary stories to tell in the dark or by the campfire. This book delivers just that, a selection of scary stories about ghosts, demons and occult. They are all tied to this one cemetery, Valleyview. Some have other tie ins but mainly it is the cemetery itself that is the big connector. It is fun to read one story and later read another that has one of the same characters or dinner etc in it also.

Full of suspense, unpredictable plots and the thrill of wondering what will happen next, I loved this book. You can easily read one or two stories quickly and then put it down and come back to it whenever you have the chance. This is great for people who only have a few minutes here and there to read. It is really hard to say which stories where my favourites but I would have to say the one with the teen that would hang out in the grave yard with his "dead" friends and also the last one about a medium.

I would really like to read more from John and Joseph and also more Tales from Valleyview. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars! Some great spooky tales for teens and adults.

Book Review by Carmen:

I absolutely loved this book, and ended up giving it 5 out of 5 stars. Since I’ve worked in retail, I can definitely identify with this book. I would recommend this book to those that work in retail and those that don’t, people that love humour and teenage antics. I’m unfortunately not going to give any funny spoilers away, you’ll just have to read the book yourself, but there was a part where Jake and Minnie (Jake’s girlfriend) adopted a kitten, and there my heart just melted. I also found Jake sometimes angsty, and I loved the way he recalls his memories. There’s some good and surprising scenes as well. It seems like this is going to be a series, and I most certainly wouldn’t mind reading the other books as well. I got a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Author Spotlight Saturday with Dylan Callens

Please welcome Dylan Callens to Genuine Jenn this week on Author Spotlight Saturday! Dylan is the Canadian author of Operation Cosmic Teapot.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why/what inspired you to write? When did you start writing?

I’m Dylan Callens. I currently teach media and English at a high school in Sudbury, Ontario. I’ve always had an interest in media, particularly writing. When I was in grade four, I started writing little books for my classmates. I knew at that point that I wanted to make books but it took me a long, long time to finally do it. I only wrote my first book at the tender age of forty.

What was your inspiration for Operation Cosmic Teapot?

There were a lot of things that inspired me to tell this story. The most significant was Nietzsche himself, who had a rough life that sets off my story. I was teaching Nietzsche’s madman parable when the storyline for Operation Cosmic Teapot hit me. It took a long time for me to develop the entire story from there, but that was the critical moment.

What three words would you use to best describe Operation Cosmic Teapot?

Bold. Different. Thoughtful.

Can you tell us if you’re working on anything else at the moment?

I am currently working on something called The Julian Calendar. It features Julius Caesar as a bumbling time-traveling action hero. It should be a fun romp. I’m just finishing the outline now. I think the first section will be released in a few weeks for free.

What was your very first book that you wrote?

Operation Cosmic Teapot is my first effort. It has taken me nearly six years to complete. In truth, a lot of that has to do with procrastination, though.

Other than your own, what are your favourite books?

My absolute favourite is Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. It’s an absolute masterpiece. Second is The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, for the same reason. I’d have to put Nineteen Eighty-Four on that list as well.

When you are writing do you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

Not usually, but while writing parts of this novel I listened to Led Zeppelin. The only reason, though, is because one character, Loki, found the ability to conjure up Led Zeppelin songs. I chuckle just thinking about it.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

Nietzsche is my favorite character. I feel bad for him. I identify with what he’s trying to do, even if I don’t agree with his methods. In researching his life, I really felt that he deserved better.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

I think that there are little things that friends do that have wormed their way into the work, but I am not consciously doing that. The characters in Operation Cosmic Teapot are based on historical people and mythology, so I tried to imagine what those people were like. In the planning phase, all the characters seemed to speak out to me. Even minor characters, like the Heaven Inc. board of directors, came to me with set personalities.

What’s your favorite treat?

Any smoothie from Booster Juice. We don’t have one in Sudbury; when I go to southern Ontario it’s always a must.

What’s your Favorite place to read/write?

I have a spot on my couch in the basement. It has become very disfigured from my butt and back. I can’t imagine writing anywhere else.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

On my own tropical island. I need to get out of the cold north!

Book Review by Carmen:

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and was a very quick read for me. I would have liked to know a little bit more about Brooklyn and how she came be who she was. This book also reminded a little bit of the movie ‘Thirteen’. I ended up liking Samantha and I’m glad that Jake eventually decided to pursue a relationship with her. When he was around Brooklyn, a bit of a less savoury side of him is revealed. I got this copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Mine (Northwest Passage Book 1) by John A. Heldt ~ Book Review

With the help of his 21-year-old trailblazing grandmother and her friends, he finds his place in a world he knew only from movies and books. But when an opportunity comes to return to the present, Joel must decide whether to leave his new love in the past or choose a course that will alter their lives forever. Book Review (Kris)

In Helena Montana Joel and Adam take a detour from their trip.  Exploring an abandoned mine. Joel just wants to pop in for a few minutes to take a peek.  The possibility of stepping into the year 1941 by just exiting a mine, threw me off.  I was not expecting this turn of events.  Joel's sense of adventure leaves him having to make due without the modern conveniences of the 20th century.  He is the 1941 town's mystery man in strange clothing with no past.  The setting makes me want to grab a root beer float, and put a dime in the jukebox.  The book is a classic love story of man falls for unavailable woman.  Imagine the fun in being sent in the past, knowing future events.  Modern miracles, or not.  The past and present always have a way of catching up with a person.  Joel faces hardship and regret.  Some things must be sacrificed for the good of others.  This is a wholesome read. Great story line.  I almost believe for a minute portholes may exist.

I give this book four stars.  Great imagination and detail.

Review:

The author throws us right into the action and it doesn't stop until the end. This book is set up with each chapter being different character. We follow these characters through the shooting event that takes place at their high school. A couple characters are throw into the mix by means of blog posts and tweets on Twitter. All the characters are intertwined in some way with each other, ex boyfriend, brother, sister, friends, girlfriend, teacher etc. We see these horrible events taking place more often then they really should be. I could feel the tension, the fear within the characters as the event takes place.

The book is mainly the one story plot "school shooting" but the author does flash backs with the characters so we get to learn more about each of them and how they are connected. What they are thinking about as they are in the final seconds of what could be the end of their lives.

I give this book a 4.5 stars out of 5. I couldn't put this book down. I just needed to find out more about the characters and what would happen in the end. I do believe that the author could have given more background into the teens lives and then lead into the event. The character could have also been more in depth to have more feelings towards each. The story is fast paced and over before you know it. Keeps your heart pumping and at the end of your seat.

47 Sweet Street by Lena North ~ Book Review

Book Description:

Louise loves her life. She married her high school sweetheart, stayed in her small home town, and has what she always wanted - a good life on 47 Sweet Street, with Dan, their daughter Nin and their two big dogs. Except, Nin is going away to college after summer and Louise just can’t seem to find the right words to talk to her daughter anymore. And what about Dan, what if they don’t have anything left to talk about either?

Nin hates her life. College can’t start fast enough, and she’s ready to start her life as an adult, to leave the boring little town and the street with the silliest name in the whole county. Probably in the whole world. Sweet Street – who the heck came up with a name like that? Except, Nin’s nervous about leaving her safe home, and what if her mom and dad won’t understand that she’s so not interested in getting a business degree?

Then Dan has to leave and things take a turn for the worse as the two women struggle to find their way back to each other, or maybe forward together?

About the Author:

The proper way to put it here would probably be to describe how I love to play with our two big dogs, how much I adore my fantastic daughters and how much I love to read.

Another way would be to use my imagination and then I would be a super powerful warrior woman, think Xena the warrior princess (though with less tacky clothes). Or when I think of it, maybe I’m actually more of a Hercule Poirot (sans the suit and moustache). Or maybe I’m like Aragorn, strong and cool and then I might get to meet Gandalf! Or I could be Bella’s pretty cousin and snap Jacob up in a second (yeah, I’m so not team Edward), or wait, maybe I could be like one of them heroines in historical novels who swoon all the time. I’ve always wanted to swoon…

Well, I guess you get how my mind is working (or not working, some say).

Anyways, I like to write. Stories, adventures, romantic and happy stuff mixed up with sorrow and hardship, and bit of laughter here and there because the way I see it – life is way too short to go around feeling grumpy.

Review:

***** 5 stars

This could very well become one of my new favourite authors in this genre, right between Carole Matthews, Lucy Dillon, Cecilia Ahern and the likes. It's just such a relatable story, if you are not a mum and you don't have teenagers yet, you will in any case remember how it was to be one. Didn't we all feel that the communication with our parents at the time was difficult to say the least? They did not understand what we were saying and vice versa. Well that's exactly what's happening with Nin and her mother Louise. The story is told from each person's perspective and lets us in on the difficulties of their communication. What they say and what the other person hears is not exactly the same and this certainly doesn't benefit their bond, they even seem to drift apart because of it. With her husband gone for six weeks, Louise feels lonely and when she tries to spend some time with her daughter, she's only to be ignored. Caroline aka Nin then inadvertently scoffs her mother when she sees her message on Facebook and it gets even worse when she laughs while she finds her mother in a struggle with the dogs in the bathroom. Both sides are so understandable and we can only hope they will find each other again. The story was sweet and touching and even though it is a rather short story, not even 60 pages, the story feels complete and it was truly a joy to read.

Review:

I am a sucker for romances and second chances at love. This story started out okay, I will be honest I was having a hard time with the two main characters, Adam and Sienna. Sienna started out to me to be very naive and didn't seem to have much self-esteem or worth for herself. Adam, well he had me thinking some women really needs to shake him silly and put him in his place for being so arrogant, womanizing and rude, get a grip man. I always give myself enough time with a book before putting it down and walking away. I am really glad I pushed through the first little bit as I ended up liking both, Adam and Sienna by the end of the book. Adam is a broken soul, he has had a really rough, emotional past. He is depressed and has post traumatic stress disorder. Sienna has also had a very emotional childhood and past romantic relationship. She is naive because she hasn't had the opportunity to experience the joys of a healthy romantic relationship. I love Sienna's strength to see Adam's good, even when everyone else sees 'bad news Adam', she never gives up on him.

The story has so much too it. I can't go into too much detail as one aspect of the story line that I really liked would give so much away. The author keeps so much from us, I found myself just wanting to know if what I thought happened was actually right or not. I did find some of the internal dialogue a bit much, could have been shorted as it was repetitive but I did like getting into Adam's emotional turmoils and getting to know the characters better inside. The story is told from both of the characters POV. I did wish the author had used a * or something to give us warning we were leaving one POV to go to the other. It wasn't really confusing but I would have liked a break to show the change of POV.

I loved the romance and fire between the two. When they were together the tension was high and the love passionate. It was bordering on soft erotica. Adam, Le sigh ;-)

Overall? I really enjoyed this novel, I give it a 4.5 stars out of 5. I have actually looked up more from the author and added them to my to-be-read list.

Review:

I really enjoyed this story first from the beginning. It hooks the reader into the life of Carl Logan. We learn just a tidbit of information about his recent past and always kept at a distance for what he does for work. We know he gets the bad guys and it is super dangerous. He does what needs to be done to get them. Carl has been off work after being injured, again we only learn a bit about this, then he is called back on a new mission after the Attorney General of the USA is kidnapped. This all happens in the UK. The action is fast and furious. I found some of it even brutally ugly that I grimaced at the thought of what was happening.

Who is this lady FBI that shows up out of nowhere? I really thought that this was making the plot even better, I really didn't see what was coming until the very last minute. The author does a great job with that one for sure! I must say I was hoping to see a loving relationship build between Logan and Grainger.

Keeping me on the edge of my seat. I found all the characters were really well developed and I could really feel for the main character, what he has went through and what he is still dealing with.

I am looking forward to book two. I love a fast paced detective/crime/thriller and this has been a great start to the series. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars!

Next ~ This year my goal is to work on meditation and mindfulness. I have been working on my yoga practice and thought that I really need to work on my meditation. At the end of January I was very unfortunate, slipping on ice twice in 24 hours. Each time I fell I put down my right hand to catch myself. The second fall I really hurt myself but thought with rest it would heal. I was mistaken and had to see my family physician, who told me I had acute right periscapular muscle strain, in English, a hurt shoulder muscle. It hurt so bad that even sneezing would kill. I have spent a lot of time at the massage therapist working out that muscle strain. Now I am working on gently stretching and eventually building my muscle up again. I was lucky in the end that is the only damage I did to my shoulder. Both the therapist and doctor said it could have been way worse.

This has really made me slow down. I am left handed but I have learned so much about how I am very right dominate for mostly everything I do except eat and write. I learned to slow down even more and let people help me. The kids and husband helped out a lot when I needed it. Even just pushing a grocery cart or helping to bring in the groceries, carrying laundry baskets to the machine for me. This also meant I had to slow down on the computer. I am still working my way back into more time online but in smaller sittings. The muscle I hurt is the big one that helps hold your shoulder blade in place, the most of my pain is in the lower shoulder blade. Typing, clicking a mouse etc is felt right back there. Our bodies are one amazing thing. Everything connected in some way or another.

I have slowly started back into my fitness, missing out on my workouts has been very tough. I have learned that fitness to me is a must. It is my happy pill. I find I have more energy and I am less stressed when I get my fitness in daily. It also helps my joints and my lower back pain. I will be starting a yoga program February 29th. I am just trying to pick between The Ultimate Yogi 108 day program or PiYo. I am leaning towards The Ultimate Yogi because of the meditation and huge variety of yoga workouts. This is also a program I have had to review but keep starting it and then moving on to something else. I will commit to a program and will work on updating here to keep myself accountable. If you want to cheer me on or become accountable please send me an email, tweet or comment below. Would love to work with you on getting healthy and fit in 2016!

#
Next on the update! My son, Parker, as some of you may have seen some of his reviews on here and photos. He has decided to get more serious about his reading and blogging. He has restarted his blog Mr. Park's Adventures and will be sharing daily fun and reviews. He is also talking about doing some writing, short stories and maybe even some videos. I am one proud momma! If you have the chance please check out Parker's blog and say hi!

Writing ~ This was put on hold while I was mending but I am really hoping to start working in some writing time a few times a week to start and then go from there. I have a short story started but I am not sure I want to finish it. I may post what I have and see what you all think. Maybe I will finish it. I would also love to work on extending Miranda and Brad's story.

That is all for now. I hope you are having a great start to 2016!
