Excerpt:
Later on at sunset, Sunny arrived at the majestic Grandfather tree and could hardly believe his eyes. “Grandfather Oak, can you hear me?” “Who awakened me?” a deep voice responded.
Sunny backed away before answering, “I did. I’m Sunny Bee requesting your help, sir. We desperately need rain over there beyond those hills.”
“Patience! Rain will come by January. Your request is unnecessary.”
“But a sunflower needs it now!” Sunny blurted. “She can’t live for much longer without it.”
“Flowers come and go, leaves fall from a tree…What must be—must be,” sighed Grandfather Oak.
Sunny’s mouth trembled and his insides crumbled. “But sir, this flower...” He wiped the tears
from his eyes. “...is my friend.”
The old tree’s eyes widened and then looked away. “You seem sincere, but I cannot interfere. Your request is hereby denied. Go and be with your friend while there is still time.”
“I can’t go back without water,” Sunny sniffled. “I will sit on this rock until you help us.” Grandfather Oak grunted and looked away.
Sunny waited on the rock all night thinking of Myah and sighed when he heard Grandfather Oak snoring.
The next day Grandfather Oak, along with many other creatures, noticed Sunny was still there, but said nothing.
Sunset had come again and a leaf falling from Grandfather Oak captured Sunny’s attention on its way to the ground. “Myah!” he blurted and wiped his eyes. “Hold on! I’ll never give up trying.”
Again, he waited long into the night.
