Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Samantha Combs

Welcome to our first Author Spotlight Saturday! Each Saturday I will be featuring an author in an interview to get to know they a bit better and learn about their books. I thought this would be a great way to find new books to add to our To-be-read pile.

For our first Saturday we have Samantha Combs on Genuine Jenn. I recently was introduced to Samantha through a mutual author friend Ruth Hartman (who will be on the blog next week!) I read Samantha's newest novel called Wingspan (review). This was a very different book for myself to read and loved the take on the paranormal and scientific approach.

Welcome to Genuine Jenn Samantha!
Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.

I’m the author of ten books, six are young adult paranormals, and three are adult horror collections.  With almost NO exception, there is a little bit of me and/or my life in every one of them.

When was your first book published?

2010.  My debut novel, Spellbound, has a sequel, Everspell, and won the Global Ebook Awards for Speculative Fiction.  Published with Astraea Press, it’s available in ebook, print and audio format.

Are you currently working on anything?

I am!  I am working on a novel called Spark, set in the rock music world.  Against everything in my world, it is shaping up to be a series.  *shudder*

Why did you decide to become an Author?

I didn’t so much “become” an author as discover I am one.  Believe me, the freakiest thing to happen to someone creative is for someone else to get them.  When that happened, I realized I had been an author all along.  Now, I get to share my creations.

Who and what inspired you to write?

My children first, and then after I opened that third eye, I discovered everything inspires me.  People who intrigue me or piss me off make it into my books.  Maybe the ones in the latter group get violently killed, but they still inspired me!

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

I hope not to be drummed out of the Cool Writers Listening to Cool Music club, but I don’t listen to any music.  I prefer the white noise of my television.  I know.  COMPLETELY UNCOOL.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

I’ve always loved Sixx from Ghostly and now, Charlie from Wingspan.  They both have a forced, yet quiet independence that drives and protects them.  I like that about them.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

I have, but they haven’t noticed yet.  ‘Nuff said.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Unbelievable question for an author.  We are, without a doubt, completely unable to answer it.  I am no exception.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

Because in each one, you will find someone you could make your best friend.

Thanks for taking your time to answer some questions for my readers at Genuine Jenn.

Thank you, Jenn!

Samantha Combs has written the following books (can be found on Amazon): Spellbound, Everspell, Ghostly, The Detention Demon, Waterdancer, Teeth and Talons, Way Past Midnight, Helloween, The Deadlies and her newest Wingspan.

  1. Very nice feature! I love characters that I think would make great friends. And I'm with you, there's a little bit of me or my life in each one of my books. I think that's how we know them so well!

Hi, Samantha! I love that you're writing your family and friends into your characters, and they haven't noticed, haha. Nice interview. And hello, Jenn - lovely blog you have here.
