Summer is in full swing and there are tons of local fresh produce available to us! We recently went strawberry picking and we also love heading to the Farmer's market. This is a great experience for kids as it is a great time to teach them healthy eating habits and how to choose the fresh produce.
I recently had the opportunity to check out this great book called At the Farmers' Market with the Kids by Leslie Jonath & Ethel Breennan. This book helps break down common fruits and veggies that you can find at your local farmers market or produce store. Ever wonder how to store beets, radishes, carrots and turnips? Remove the tops from all roots, but don't toss out those from beets and turnips as they can be sauteed or add to soups and stews. After removing tops, wash and dry roots and store them in a plastic bag for up to 3 days in refrigerator. Beets, turnips and carrots will keep for up to 3 weeks and radishes for 1 week.
The book is divided into sections based on the season - Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter and each fruit or veggie has a page dedicated to describing the item, how to choose, store and the different varieties. There are recipes that follow this page to give you and your kids an idea of what to do with each fruit and vegetable. How about Chocolate-Beet cupcakes? I am excited to try this with the kids next spring when the red beets are fresh in season. They look like the red velvet cakes.
This book also includes a few different crafts that can be done with fruits and veggies with the kids in the kitchen. Why not make Blackberry Tie-Dye T-shirts or try coloring eggs with Beets or with onions skins?
We already have plans for this fall when we go apple picking! We will be trying our hand at Smooth and Creamy Apple Butter. Yum!
This is a fabulous book to have to teach kids about eating whole, fresh and local foods. It also helps them get excited to help out in the kitchen.
Head over to Raincoast Books to find out where to purchase this great book.
