BMO Eco Smart Mortgage Review and Giveaway

When I got my first real job, I decided it was time to invest in a place to call my own. Little did I know there is more than just having a mortgage and calling this place home. Looking back just over 7 years ago I didn't know as much about buying a house as I do now. 

If I could do it all over again I would definitely do things differently. I would have look for a more Eco Smart house. I would calculate ALL the OTHER costs of owning a house also. Do you know 51% of Canadian homeowners cite utility costs as the biggest surprise of home ownership, I am in that count! We have been trying to do what we can to make this house more Eco Smart to save money and help the environment. 

BMO (Bank Of Montreal) has introduced a new mortgage called Eco Smart Mortgage. This is a five year fixed mortgage at 3.89% that rewards customers for making their house better for the environment. If you've bought, plan to buy or already own a home with energy efficient features, you can qualify for a great rate on our full featured BMO Eco Smart Mortgage. All you have to do to find out if you qualify is to print off the checklist and do a walk around your house.  

For Single Family Homes including townhouses (condo or freehold), your home will need 6 out of 7 features to qualify:

• High efficiency heating system
• High efficiency air cooling system or no air cooling system
• Good quality attic insulation
• ENERGY STAR^® qualified windows with no cracks or air gaps
• ENERGY STAR qualified hot water system or solar or tankless hot water system
• ENERGY STAR qualified doors with no cracks or air gaps
• At least three ENERGY STAR qualified major appliances

I know this house we are in needs a lot of updates to qualify and we are not in the place to do them at the moment. We are looking for a new house and as we look I will know be keeping this checklist with me to find a Eco Smart home. Or at least one as close as we can!

We do have a Energy Star Hot water tank and I believe our broiler is High efficiency heating system but that is pretty much it. We are looking to do a few little things in the next year like change to newer lights and bulbs, get an Energy Star kitchen appliances.
